Study Shows How to Study for Optimum Results

December 7, 2016

A study done at Tufts University in Massachusetts looked at the best ways to recall information and retain it for longer.  There are techniques you can use to improve your marks and feel less stressed about studying.

Amy Smith is a graduate student and lead author of the study. "I would recommend always reviewing your material first … and then give yourself practice tests. Read your notes maybe once or twice and then push them aside and make yourself remember as much as you can," Smith said....

Travel opens the mind and helps with language learning

October 4, 2016
One thing that is great about going to a new place is practicing a foreign language.

You can practice a new language and not be embarrassed because those people don't know you and will never see you again.
You don't feel as shy to ask a stranger for advice or help.
You can feel more open and adventurous when you are exploring a place you know nothing about.

What a great feeling of freedom!

Take a bus to a section of town that looks interesting. Wander around with no plan.  Keep your eyes and e...

West Side teens chose East Side public school: News article

June 30, 2015

Many parents of my students are concerned that Vancouver's public schools are not good enough to prepare their children for the best universities.  They think that paying more money for private school is the only way their children will succeed. This is not the case.
I have had a number of students go to elite universities in England, Canada and the USA from the public system in Vancouver.  It is the student that plots his or her future, not the school.

While private schools offer elite care fo...

How to get kids to listen

March 9, 2014

This is a blog posting from Aha Parenting.

10 Alternatives to "Consequences" When Your Child Isn't Cooperating

"Throw the word "consequence" entirely out of your vocabulary and replace it with the term "problem-solving." -- Becky Eanes

"My 3 year old was sitting on the couch after bath wearing her towel and said NO about 5 times when asked to get into her pj's. I was busy with the baby and I heard my husband say "OK fine -- no books then!"  so I said "Hey! We've got a problem - it's bedtime ...

It takes TIME to get out of ESL

January 29, 2014
It is important that stress is reduced but focus is improved.
Fun = Language Skills

Lord Byng Secondary School says this:
    •    Students typically spend 2-3 years in ESL + 1-2 years in transitional. It is not unusual for students who come in with very limited English to spend an additional 1-2 years in ESL.
    •    A new language takes students up to 7 years to attain fluency.

My advice is this:
Please do not fret if you are not out of ESL immediately.
This is a process that you are g...

About Me

Lori in I got my Bachelor of Education degree in the USA but was born and raised in Canada. Working in Asia and with immigrant adults and children for 22 years has given me insights into the difficulties they face in a new country and school system. I like to help adults adjust to and explore the rich and diverse opportunities in Canada while also supporting them in their challenge of parenting in a new culture. I love to help children learn English, develop skills, and gain confidence to succeed in school and life.

IDEAS

“Don't aim at success. The more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side effect of one's personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one's surrender to a person other than oneself. Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success: you have to let it happen by not caring about it. I want you to listen to what your conscience commands you to do and go on to carry it out to the best of your knowledge. Then you will live to see that in the long-run—in the long-run, I say!—success will follow you precisely because you had forgotten to think about it” ― Viktor E. Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning A lack of planning on your part does not constitute and emergency on my part. "Most people don't plan to fail; they fail to plan." ~~John L. Beckley
